The Natives of the Tidelands lived in harmony with nature. They fished from the ocean and dark water rivers, hunted game in the thick forestland, and subsisted on the abundant berries and fruits that they could find.

The first Europeans came in 1526 under the Spanish leadership of Lucas Vesquez de Ayllon, who settled on the banks of the Winyah Bay. They failed to farm the land and left for the Spice Islands of the Caribbean.

By the mid-1600s, English and French outposts sprang up and trade was established with the Natives.
The rivers served as shipping highways. Eventually the swamplands of the region were tamed, and the Native Americans were conquered. They vanished from the area, and in their wake, Georgetown became a
bustling seaport.

As the state's third oldest city, Georgetown dates to 1729. The oak-lined four by eight block section that comprises Georgetown's Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
